Focused Shockwave Therapy

Persistent tendon and soft tissue pain can keep active adults from the work, sports, and hobbies they love, even after months of rest.

Does This Sound Like You?

Many people come to Highland Physical Therapy after trying everything they can think of. They have rested, stretched, iced, and taken pain medication. Even so, the same nagging ache in the heel, elbow, shoulder, or knee returns as soon as they get active again.

This kind of pain affects more than one joint. People start to dread their first steps out of bed in the morning. A round of golf, a hike in the hills around Pocatello, or an afternoon playing with the grandkids gets cut short. Everyday tasks like lifting a grocery bag, gripping a coffee mug, or reaching into a cupboard become reminders that something still isn’t right.

Over time, it’s easy to believe this is something to live with, or that injections or surgery are the only options left. For many people, that simply isn’t the case.

Top Benefits of Focused Shockwave Therapy

  • Non-invasive and drug-free – Focused shockwave works without needles, incisions, or medication. For people who want to avoid injections or put off surgery, it offers a conservative option that supports the body’s own repair
  • Reaches deeper tissue – Because the energy converges at a set depth, focused shockwave can reach tendons and tissue that surface-level treatments struggle to affect, such as the deeper structures of the shoulder or hip.
  • No downtime – There is no recovery period after a session. Most patients drive themselves home, head back to work, or carry on with their day as normal.
  • Quick sessions – Each treatment takes around 10 to 15 minutes, so it’s easy to fit into a busy schedule, often as part of a regular physical therapy appointment.
  • Works with exercise, not instead of it – Shockwave can help settle pain enough for patients to strengthen effectively. Many people see the most meaningful
  • Helpful for long-standing problem – Shockwave is often considered for problems that have lingered for three months or more and haven’t improved with rest, stretching, or other treatments alone.

What Happens During a Session?

Your first visit starts with a full assessment. Kimberly or a member of the team will ask about your history, look at how you move, and pinpoint where the problem is coming from. If focused shockwave is a good fit, treatment can often begin the same day.

During the session, a small amount of gel is applied to the skin and a handheld applicator is placed over the treatment area. You’ll feel a series of rapid tapping or pulsing sensations. Some people notice mild discomfort over the most sensitive spots. The intensity is adjusted throughout so it stays manageable.

Afterward, the area may feel tender for a day or two, which is a normal response. Your physical therapist will guide you on activity levels and give you a home exercise plan to support the treatment between visits. Progress is reviewed at every appointment, so your plan can be adjusted as you improve.

Is Focused Shockwave Right for Me?

Focused shockwave therapy may be worth exploring if:

  • Your pain has lasted longer than three months
  • Rest, stretching, or medication haven’t made a lasting difference
  • You want to avoid or delay injections or surgery
  • You’re keen to get back to an active lifestyle

Shockwave isn’t suitable for everyone. It’s typically avoided during pregnancy, over areas with an active infection or tumor, and for people with certain bleeding disorders or taking some blood-thinning medications. That’s why every patient is assessed before treatment begins.

If you’re unsure, a Free Discovery Visit is a no-pressure way to meet the team, talk through your situation, and find out whether focused shockwave could help you get back to doing what you love.
