I say “Shocking” using a play on words referring to my Shockwave treatment. You see, three years back I began increasing my hiking miles to prepare for a Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike. I broke my own rules about increasing too much too fast and ended up with a hip injury including hip flexor muscle strain, bursitis and tendinopathy. I tried all the treatment options I use for my patients but didn’t work. I didn’t make the rim-to-rim hike. Instead became the driver for the other hikers.
Fast forward two years and I was even worse, unable to walk more than a mile and with pain. I had gone to a professional conference where I learned about focused Shockwave and gave it a try. I couldn’t believe how much better I felt! It wasn’t a one-and-done miracle, but my symptoms were better than they were in 2 years. Eight more sessions and I was able to begin hiking again – at a reasonable progression. Then last October with my brother-in-law I completed the Angel’s Landing hike in Zion National Park! It was a long-time goal. The hike consisted of 2.5 miles of switchbacks, holding safety chains near 1000+ foot drops and climbing nearly 1800 vertical feet. I’ve included a photo of myself cooling off in the river afterward. Then last April I completed the Bengal Triathlon with my three sisters and two nieces. I’m so glad I didn’t miss out on those experiences with my family. I’m looking forward to more adventures.

This is why I offer Focused Shockwave services in my clinic. No, it’s not the same as therapeutic ultrasound at all, no more than a bathtub water ripple is the same as high surf worthy ocean waves. My Focused Shockwave machine can deliver specialized high intensity soundwaves as deep as four inches into damages tissues – think low back and hips. With the specialized adapters I can also decrease the depth to one inch and two inches as needed. It works fast with acute injuries – those that happened days to a few weeks ago. It takes a bit longer for chronic pain such as mine, that occurred months to years. This treatment can be a stand-alone modality or part of an individually designed rehabilitation program.

Do you have chronic issues that cause you to be missing out on activities you love? Or do you have acute injuries forcing you to miss an event? For instance, are you having trouble with stadium stairs and sitting for the upcoming fall sports season? Or do you have high school athletes that don’t want to miss out on their season?
